Sarah
I rang Olivia back as soon as I could. I had to pretend I needed to drive to the pet shop for more dog food so I could have some privacy. That âRing me urgentlyâ text of hers that had come through in the car had worried me. Thankfully, Iâd managed to show Tom an old spam message I hadnât got round to deleting.
Iâd learned a bit more about Alex since Olivia had asked me to cover for her. Sheâd also asked me to do the same a few more times; twice overnight, when Hugo had been away at conferences. I hoped that he didnât mention it to Tom when he came back.
âHe makes me laugh,â she said, her eyes shining, when she came to collect the girls after the last occasion a week ago.
Weâd spoken quietly in the kitchen while the kids were watching television. Sheâd had her lovely long strawberry-blonde hair done, I noticed. It was a bit shorter now at the back, tapering down at the front. The style suited her.
âI feel like a real person with Alex. He wants me to leave Hugo and live with him instead.â
âBut what about the girls?â
âHeâs always wanted children of his own. His wife wasnât a family person.â
âBut theyâre not his own,â I tried pointing out.
Sheâd given me a baleful look. âI thought youâd understand, Sarah.â
âI do. I just donât want to see anyone hurt.â
âBut weâre hurt already. Donât you see that? Wouldnât you be tempted if someone came along and offered you love?â
âMaybe,â I said. âBut I know what itâs like to come from a family thatâs been broken.â
âYour mother died,â she said.
âExactly. And divorce is a type of bereavement too. I couldnât let Freddie suffer.â
âI see.â Her voice was cold. âIâm sorry you feel that way.â
I reached out for her. âIâm not saying I disapprove. Iâm worried for you all.â
âI know.â She gave me a quick squeeze back. âBut it was you who inspired me.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âRemember how you stayed here after Freddie was born?â
âHow could I forget? You were my lifesaver.â
She gave me a hug. âAnd you showed me some things too. I loved having a baby in the house. I was jealous of you, to be honest. But Hugo hated the crying at night and the disruption. I realized he couldnât cope with a third, and that made me turn away from him even more. Then when I saw how you were so unhappy, trying to keep the balance between Freddie and Tom, I realized life was too short to keep struggling when a relationship is obviously failing.â
So it was my fault. Or partly. That made me feel even worse.
âYou wonât tell Tom or Hugo, will you?â she asked.
âOf course not.â
I didnât like the deceit, but I owed Olivia.
âThanks. Youâre a good friend.â
And now thereâs this âRing me urgentlyâ text.
She picked up immediately. âWeâve left,â she said. Her voice was breathy and excited and scared, all at the same time.
âWhat?â
âThe girls and I. Weâve moved to Alexâs place.
